As you gain protons, your element will grow unstable and radioactive if not matched by the required number of neutrons. If the isotope is unstable for too long, (this depends on the isotope) it will release a subatomic particle and collapse into a smaller and more stable isotope. The decay chamber upgrade allows your isotope to collapse without losing three times. Most other upgrades are not scientifically accurate and are used to make the game possible.
