I found a really good theory: "I have a theory that Charles is actually clinically depressed, but hides it or he may be dying already and just hasn't told anyone. The reason why all his "greatest plans" involve him crashing his helicopter into things isn't because he's an idiot, it's because he doesn't have the will to keep going anymore and/or knows he doesn't have long left anyways, but still wants his death to have some meaning to it. So, when you think about it from that mindset, the VH ending is the best ending from Charles' perspective: he gets to go out on his own terms and everyone remembers him as the heroic, happy pilot he looks like to the outside world."
