Keys: S - show variables H - hide variables R - reset
This type of provisional designation is used for assigning temporary and unique designations to minor planets (asteroids, centaurs and TNOs.) after they're found based on when they're discovered. Although they can not give the exact date they were designated nor any information on when they were discovered, they are still very useful outside of just assigning them names.
