when someone is having an episode, they might say things they don’t actually mean, say things they normally wouldn’t say, or react in ways that are completely out of character for them Sometimes when someone is struggling really badly, they aren’t fully in control of their thoughts, emotions, or words. They might say something and then later be like “why did I even say that??” because they’ve calmed down and are thinking more clearly again They might also say different things that contradict each other, suddenly become extremely emotional, isolate themselves, lash out, make jokes about serious things, or say things that sound completely unlike them. That doesn’t automatically mean they’re a bad person or that those words represent who they are all the time Obviously, people can still be affected by what someone says during an episode, and that’s completely understandable. But there’s a difference between holding someone accountable for genuinely hurting you and assuming that everything they said while they were severely struggling is exactly what they believe deep down Mental illness can affect the way someone thinks, reacts, communicates, and handles their emotions. Some people experience episodes where those things become MUCH harder to control So please try to remember that the person you see during their worst moment isn’t necessarily the same person they are when they’re okay. Sometimes they’re just struggling and don’t know how to handle what’s happening to them You never really know what someone is dealing with behind the screen, so try to have some patience before immediately judging them based on one moment This isn’t an excuse to hurt people. It’s just a reminder to have some understanding for people who are genuinely struggling.
I struggled w/ an episode of my own last night, and i was not the same person i am now. i had no control over what happened, but im not excusing my behavior.
