On 1 October 2028, after several days of persistent reconnaissance, the Väldurisk Frivilliglegion began a limited offensive from its foothold in southern Karakia. The operation marked the VFL’s transition from observation and preparation to sustained ground action against forces of the former Red Line, now reorganized under the People’s Republic of Karakia (PRK). The offensive centered on a main thrust to the northeast, supported by a smaller advance directly east. Its objectives were deliberately limited: expand the VFL-held security zone, seize nearby villages and towns, pressure PRK forces in the south, and force them to divert manpower and equipment away from other sectors. The western side of the VFL foothold remained primarily defensive. Forces there protected the airstrip, supply routes, and the flank of the main advance, while remaining prepared to conduct a smaller local push if PRK resistance weakened sufficiently. Unmanned systems played a central role during the opening phase of the operation. Reconnaissance drones had spent the previous days observing suspected PRK positions, movement routes, and staging areas. Once military targets were confirmed, strike drones, munition-dropping systems, and other available fires were employed against PRK positions and supporting logistics. Decoy drones were also used to complicate the PRK response and create uncertainty over where further attacks might develop. Early VFL reports estimated that approximately 80–90% of planned drone missions achieved their intended effect, although exact results were difficult to independently verify. PRK units nevertheless suffered heavy casualties and significant equipment losses during the opening stages of the offensive. Vehicles, communications equipment, supply assets, and other military materiel were lost or abandoned as several positions came under sustained pressure. Some PRK formations were forced to disperse or withdraw, while others became increasingly fragmented as communications and local supply networks were disrupted.
