Studio Description: Have you ever wondered what Scratch was like before you joined? What if we could program our way back to the past of Scratch? What if Scratch 1.4 was still the current version today? What if the Gobo and Scratch Cat sprites never met? What if you had to code your projects without clones or custom blocks? In this Scratch Design Studio, we invite you to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and explore the history of Scratch itself! You could imagine how modern features would look if they were built into the vintage 2000s desktop version. Or, you could explore how your favorite current project would function if you were limited to the original block palette. You might even animate a story about modern sprites meeting the classic Scratch characters from decades ago! Whatever era of Scratch you choose, we encourage you to have fun celebrating the community's roots and imagining how things might be if we stepped back in time! Looking for ideas to get started? • Retro UI: What if 3.0 features were trapped in 1.4? Create an art project or animation showing what modern tools (like extension blocks or the vector editor) would look like in the old grey and blue interface. • The Mesh Connection: What if old-school features never left? Create a project inspired by Scratch 1.4's experimental "Mesh" feature or the classic "Motor Blocks" from early LEGO integration. • Vintage Blocks Only: What if you had a limited palette? Challenge yourself to make a game or art piece using only blocks that existed in the original Scratch releases (no clones, no custom blocks, no video sensing!). • Sprite Generations: What if the modern Scratch Cat met the 2007 Scratch Cat? Animate a fun interaction, comic, or podcast discussion between the different generations of Scratch mascots. • Forum Time Machine: What if you could visit the older Scratch Forums? Design a project that simulates browsing the classic forums, complete with retro signature banners and text-based text RPGs. • The Pico & Tera Origin: What if Pico, Nano, Tera, and Giga had a completely different introduction? Write an animated backstory or game about how these iconic sprites first arrived on the Scratch website. Remember, these are just suggestions. You are always welcome to come up with your own Scratch nostalgia ideas or take inspiration from projects already in the studio!
This is an idea for the next Scratch Design Studio called Scratch Back To The Past. I don't know if it will come true ever, but hopefully it could.
