Chapter Twenty-Two – Exposed Friday morning started like every other lately — Yn keeping her head down, moving through the halls like a shadow. She thought she’d gotten used to the stares, the whispers, the quiet cruelty. She was wrong. It happened during the school assembly. The entire student body was crammed into the gym, the cheer team lined up near the front. Yn sat in the back row of the bleachers, hoping to blend into the crowd. Then Lila took the microphone. She was supposed to be introducing the cheer team’s upcoming fundraiser, but her smile told Yn this wasn’t going to be about bake sales. “You know,” Lila began, her voice carrying easily through the speakers, “being on this team means representing the school with pride. Which is why it’s so sad when some people… can’t handle the pressure.” A ripple of laughter moved through the crowd. Lila’s eyes found Yn in the back. “Some of you might not know this, but Yn’s been in trouble before. Not just here — I mean, way before she even came to this school.” Yn’s stomach dropped. “She used to be on another cheer team,” Lila continued, her tone dripping with fake sweetness. “But she got kicked off. Something about a fight with a teammate? Oh, and wasn’t there a rumor about her stealing someone’s boyfriend back then too?” The crowd erupted — gasps, laughter, whispers. Phones were already out, recording. Yn felt frozen, her face burning. She wanted to shout that it wasn’t true, that Lila was twisting everything, but her voice wouldn’t come. Lila smirked. “Guess some people never change.” The principal finally stepped in, taking the mic and scolding Lila, but the damage was done. Everyone had heard. Everyone had seen. As the assembly ended, Yn stayed in her seat until the gym was nearly empty. She could still hear the laughter echoing in her head, could still feel every pair of eyes on her. Walking out, she realized something she hadn’t before — Lila wasn’t just trying to ruin her reputation. She was trying to erase her completely.
