Chapter Ten – The Tryout The gym was buzzing with energy — music blaring, judges seated at a long table, and a crowd of hopefuls stretching and practicing their routines. Yn stood near the back, tying her hair into a tight ponytail. She hadn’t planned on trying out for the cheer team, but Freya had convinced her. “You need something new,” Freya had said. “Something that’s yours.” Yn was about to agree — until she saw Lila walk in, wearing a glittery crop top and a smirk that could slice glass. “Well, well,” Lila said, sauntering over. “Didn’t know you were trying out. Guess you’re still chasing things you can’t have.” Yn kept her voice calm. “I’m here for me, not for you.” Lila leaned closer. “Then you won’t mind when I take the spot you want — and make sure you never get it.” The coach called names for the first round. Lila was up before Yn, and she nailed her routine — flips, jumps, and a perfect smile aimed straight at Malachi, who was sitting in the bleachers watching. When Yn’s turn came, she stepped onto the floor, heart pounding. She started strong — sharp motions, clean jumps — until halfway through, she noticed Lila whispering to one of the judges. The judge’s expression shifted, and Yn’s confidence wavered. She stumbled on her final spin, landing slightly off balance. Lila’s laugh echoed from the sidelines. After the tryouts, the coach announced the finalists. Lila’s name was called first. Yn’s name was last — but it was still there. Lila stormed over. “You got lucky. But in the next round, I’ll make sure you’re out.” Freya stepped between them. “Or maybe you’ll finally realize Yn’s not going anywhere.” Lila’s eyes narrowed. “We’ll see.” From the bleachers, Malachi watched the exchange, his expression unreadable. Mekonnen leaned over to him. “You gonna let her keep this up?” Malachi didn’t answer — but his gaze stayed locked on Yn, like he was seeing her fight back for the first time.
