Wraithsprit didn't know why he'd woken up today. He didn't know how long he'd been asleep, either, blinking in confusion as he was pulled out of the empty nothingness of the dark. The forest was just as gloomy as ever, and he recognized the familiar shapes of Berylberry's clearing immediately. Oh, and there was Cobwebpaw, too, curled up in the corner. Sleeping, as well, best not to wake her. Wraith slowly got to his paws, which felt strangely weak. Had it really been that long since he'd last been conscious? But surely Ryl would have woken him up... wait. Where... where was she? As the fog in his mind began to clear, he remembered that she'd left. Gone somewhere. He'd been worried, a little frustrated too... where had she gone, again? He couldn't quite remember, but just as he shook his head and took a few steps away, he was hit with an odd flash of panic. /Angelsharkmonarch/ was the automatic thought that came with it, another hint. Something about her... and... oh, oh no. He'd told Berylberry about Angelsharkmonarch, he recalled. And then she'd left. Wraith quickly reached the same conclusion that he had a long time ago, that she must have left to look for El. And then, he remembered it fully now, searching for her, meeting that stupid StarClanner at the border to ask for information, some MossClan cat who didn't think the Dark Forest was real. And then he'd come back here, after a while of looking, hoping she'd just been out collecting moss, and... fallen asleep? Perhaps trying to shut his brain off for a while. That was the only reason he bothered to sleep in the Dark Forest. But why had he wanted to do that, especially when his friend was missing? Hm. There was another feeling, quieter, hidden. ...Grief? /Don't think about that,/ his brain responded immediately, seeming to block him from puzzling it out. That was strange, but it wasn't the priority right now. He needed to find Berylberry. Another flash of panic momentarily blinded him as he looked back at his nest, noticing that the moss was dry and had lost all color. It had been a while since it'd been changed. "Ryl?" Wraith called uncertainly, ducking though the thornbushes around the clearing and into the open forest. He could feel it now, it hadn't just been a while. It had been /moons/, hadn't it? No. Even /more/ than that. Was it his imagination, or were his paws slightly more transparent? Heart beating faster, he padded though the empty forest, looking for the black-and white pelt of his only friend. Old conversations and memories resurfaced as he walked, until... The dark grey tom stopped in his tracks, seemingly frozen in place. He remembered the moment when he'd fallen asleep, now. He'd been searching for Berylberry for moons, and then he'd returned to the clearing, desperately hoping she'd be there. And then when she hadn't, he'd just... /Given up./ Collapsed, angry and tired and devastated, curling up into a ball and closing his eyes in hopes that maybe he'd wake up okay again. But not after this long. Now, it may have been too late, and maybe Ryl was gone now, maybe she'd been waiting for him, maybe she'd faded, and Wraith now feared that he might have, too, if not for whatever force that compelled him to get back up today. And he was now hyper aware of every single second he'd lost, how time had moved around him. What had he been /thinking?/ If there was even a chance Ryl was still out there, it was his duty to find her. So he broke into a run, paws thumping in rhythm with the ticking of the invisible clock above him, resuming the hopeless mission he'd abandoned long ago.
Hiya! More of a nice exercise to come out of writer's block! I haven't written Wraith in a whillllee sheesh. Anyways I've seen other people headcanon that ghosts can fall asleep for years without knowing (cough cough inactive cough cough) and I figured I'd maybe make it so it takes a few minutes for my dude here to remember everything? Might be a litttlle confusing to those of you not familiar with Wraith's lore. Which is LITERALLY everyone but please please do guess in the comments I'd love to hear what you all infer, especially cause there's not lots to go off of here >:) Not my best stuff, but certainly not my worst, and it was fun so why not post it! Also I was going to make this just comments but it got kinda long so here now you all can look at it and be vaguely miffed that I'm not writing Cider instead ahaha
