if dream is for dreamy, and every is for every time you smiled at me, then fall is for falling — into the depth of you, where I have always been. the autumn air is sharp today, but you are the heavy mug pressed against my palms, the heat of spiced apple cider settling sweet in my chest. I think of the way you laugh, that sudden, unbothered sound that pulls the breath from me and leaves it scattered on the ground like dry october leaves. I have loved you for lifetimes, quietly, from the edges, but this season belongs to us. every word you say to me is a wind that changes my direction. if fall is truly for falling, then I am dropping faster now, tumbling through the golden air, letting go of the branches just to land where you are. it is a deep and steady descent, not a crash, but a sinking — the way an evening sun folds into the waiting hills, sure of where it belongs. I am completely undone by you, warmed through to the bone, holding nothing back as the world turns cold around us, and I just keep falling. if the trees can let go so beautifully, trusting the ground to catch them, then I will let go too. I am falling more than I did yesterday, and I will fall deeper tomorrow. for after all, fall is for falling.
