You have been warned dont report me Chapter 5: Frustration L was angry. No, that wasn’t it. He had some kind of… dull feeling that annoyed him and he couldn’t get rid of it. He (slightly against his will) had gone back to Shinji’s office with Takakura for reports on suspects. And what had they found? Two new mvrdered civilians and not a single lead in sight. He and Takakura had interviewed their suspects once more. Nothing. ‘And Shinji.. He’s so innocent that he’s not. It’d be easy to dismiss him. He has alibis. He’d be clear by anyone else’s standards.’ But he was not clear by L’s standards. “Ryuzaki.” Takakura said. They were sitting in the empty interrogation room, the light flickering above them as they tried to find something. “We’re getting nowhere with this. We need to wait for the forensics team to analyze the b0dies and crime scenes.” ‘S—t… I am not going to be dragged around in a circle.’ L thought, though he held his composure. Getting emotional wouldn’t get him anywhere. ‘Empty our minds of any theories. Do it until the facts are in place. Work backwards.’ “Make use of his first mistake.” L said, sitting up in his chair. “I… I’m not sure what you mean?” “His first mistake. Or really mistakes, actually.” He stood up. “First.” He outstretched his right index finger. “He left three we4pons at his first crime: the gvn, the pliers, and the hammer. Have someone bring those out again, find out the brand and what places around here sell those brands. It’s likely that they bought the items in person, purchasing a gvn online would be able to be traced back easily. Same with the pliers and hammer. We’d have to assume that they bought everything in person from multiple different places.” “And what was the second mistake?” “He nailed a Wara Ningyo doll to the wall of that first crime scene, yes?” “Yes.” L held up two fingers now. "So his second mistake was using a brand-new iron nail. We need forensics to analyze the head of that nail under a microscope." “So what does that mean for us?” L sighed slightly. Did he have to explain everything? "It means we are not looking at human strength. We are looking at the tool. Every hammer head has unique microscopic imperfections and wear patterns. When it strikes metal, it leaves a signature impression." His eyes lit up. "Mr. Takakura. Ask forensics to do a tool mark comparison on the nail head. And check the shaft of the nail for skin cells or touch DNA. The killer had to hold it in their bare fingers to steady it.” ‘This can work. It can work.’ “How do you know this will work?” Takakura said, standing up with a skeptical look. “I don’t. But… perfect crimes have perfect flaws.” “There’s the chance that the killer deliberately changed how they nailed the doll to the wall to throw you off. Maybe it’s a trap.” “Maybe it is. But any lead is a lead. We can’t overlook anything.” See, at this time, L’s methods of investigation were of more normal degree. He used ways that weren’t… well, illegal, in most cases. After this case, L started using those immoral strategies. Why? This case would have been different if he’d done what he later did in the Kira case. Much different. Guilt is a funny thing. “Alright. I'll inform the forensics team, then.” L loosened his tie slightly, sighing. He hoped this would work, or help at the very least. ‘And there’s the fact that none of our suspects are that suspicious. Let’s pray we find a lead.’ Sometime later, L left the interrogation room. There was nothing left to discuss. They’d already interviewed suspects for the second time, and still had found nothing. Shinji had been the last one to be interviewed. He’d seemed... different. It was like something was weighing him down. Not mvrder. But something. They walked next to each other in silence, since as said before, Shinji was last, and they’d left at the same time. It wasn’t planned, it just happened. “..What’s on your mind, Mr. Kazama?” L asked, tilting his head to the side a bit. “You’re different from our last encounter.” The question wasn’t some manipulative strategy to catch Shinji in a lie. It was just curiosity. “Hmm? Oh- haha-.. I suppose. To be honest, I am… not entirely sure.” He smiled at the ground as they walked. “Everyone has their ups and downs, right? Bad days and good days?” “Of course. It’s not that uncommon for people.” “Oh, really? Interesting.”
The silence returned. Shinji was different. He carried himself with more humility than their first encounter. He was like a different person, yet he seemed the same as well. Shinji’s eyes glanced over to L. “Oh- Ryuzaki.” “Yes?..” “Your hair’s coming undone.” He tugged lightly on the back of L’s hair. Shinji quickly and fluidly re-tied it, then went back to walking next to L. “Thank you.” L said, surprised. He’d not expected that. “Don’t mention it.” ‘Could he really be a mvrderer?’ L thought. ‘How? No, I need to stay focused. Anyone could be a mvrderer if they were pushed enough. Don’t even start getting attached. He’s a suspect. A suspect.’ Shinji felt different than usual. He felt… nicer? But as they parted ways, that sick feeling immediately returned. And he felt himself saying that same sentence that he had been saying these past few weeks. A part of him didn’t want to say it, to feel it. But that part was fading. And so he said it. ‘They’ll never know.’ Art: @PandaSans765 Writing: @PandaSans765 hey guys, sorry i didn’t post this sooner. i’ve been very depressed and i haven’t even started on any of the oc drawings i need to make or any of the dta stuff for my 400+ project but i hope you guys like this chapter, i tried really hard theres totally no The Game Begins refs heheh…. song: The Game Begins from Death Note the Musical
