The other kits were fast asleep, but Flarekit’s eyes were wide and sharp in the dark. Away from the judging eyes of the queens, her sweet, kittenish smile completely vanished. Her face was flat, cold, and intensely focused. She picked at a loose thread of moss with one claw, her tail giving a single, irritated twitch. She was mentally replaying every conversation from the day, cataloging which cats were gullible enough to fall for her sugary routine and which ones she needed to watch out for. She hated acting like a helpless baby, but it was the perfect armor. Suddenly, a sleeping kit nearby whimpered in their sleep and stirred. In a fraction of a heartbeat, Flarekit’s entire demeanor flipped. Her eyes smoothed into big, glossy pools of innocent warmth, and a gentle, comforting purr rumbled softly in her throat. She leaned over, pressing her warm flank against the restless kit to soothe them back to sleep. The moment the kit settled, the sweetness vanished from Flarekit's face just as quickly as it had appeared.
