she stared at the button, it would only take one click. just one click before it dialed. was she ready for this? in a way she already knew how it would end. ending what she knew wouldn't last. she really didn't want to have this conversation but it was better than silence. and all the questions she had would be answered. she took a deep breath. but it still shook. her heart felt heavy. like a string was wrapped around it, but on the end there were rocks. dragging it down, down, down... click. it took the screen a second, but once the dialing tone sounded, his picture popped up. the strings gave a tug and she felt tears spring. no. she could do this. she listened to the phone ring. ring. ring. click. he picked up. "hello?" oh gosh. his voice. "hi." she whispered. her voice was low, raspy, sad. it was quiet for a moment. almost too quiet - she could hear the kids playing nearby. she could hear the kicking of soccer balls. she could hear the whistles. she could hear- "okay, so..." he left the sentence running, waiting for her. "explain." she whispered. "okay, so, what happened that day was she came up to me-" she sighed, cutting him off. "I already know that. explain-" her voice cracked and tears filled her eyes once more. "...explain what you told him." her brother wasn't the best at explaining these things. she needed to hear it from him. needed to hear him say it. needed to hear him tell her. "what do you mean?" he sounded genuinely confused - but there was caution in his voice too. "what you told him. I need you to say it." a pause. "what are you talking about? what did I say?" he sounded agitated now. so different from the smiling, happy guy she knew. "[code name: blue], you know what you said, just please say it to me." she added more force to her voice, the sprinkle of anger at him not ever telling her these things personally, rising. "just tell me." now he sounded tired. the wave of guilt hit her in the chest. was she making this a big deal? "what you told him at the field. at practice." he's seen her too, that was what hurt. he could've told her. but he didn't. "oh..." so he knew. now for him to explain. "listen...I was going to tell you, I just didn't know when." her breath hitched. "is it true?" her voice was so quiet. "yes." he said something else after that, but she couldn't hear. everything was a blur of tears falling, noises drowned out. "[code name: b]?" she blinked, letting the tears fall. and then she smiled. "okay." click. call disconnected.
