After the devestation of WWII, Mercedes needed to prove that they could still make the greatest car in the world, and they decided to do so by taking on the rapidly growing interest in high-performance sports cars in the US. Tracing its roots to the W194, the 300 SL had everything: a steel tubular frame, 0 - 60 in around 7.5 seconds, which was unheard of at that time, and, most importantly, the iconic gull-wing doors. It also had a top speed of over 160 mph, making it the fastest car in the world at the time.
