Spies. They are everywhere. There is no way to control them unless you are the Head of the E.C.N. The E.C.N. headquarters is located in San Francisco, California. If you were to join the E.C.N. like me, then you would need to complete nine intense parkour courses, read 900 books in one week, and have at least three of your most loved ones perish in a terrible fire. But I am not going to talk about how I miss my dead family members. It is my duty as an E.C.N. agent to record what happened to Amity Lumeia and Ling Nina. They are only 13 and 14 years old. Who would have thought they would become agents of the E.C.N. just like me? Their story starts a bit before I began writing this, back when Amity and Ling were first recruited by the E.C.N. Nobody really knows what happened to the girls before the Head came and found them. But two days later, they had an apartment in San Francisco and had started their training. Amity was 13, but that does not mean she was any less smart or strong than Ling. She was amazing at math and was always volunteering. She could easily calculate exactly how much trash she would have to pick up to clean a sixth of the park. Ling, on the other hand, was a year older than Amity and was much more on the adventurous side. Those are really the only words I can think of to describe Ling’s spirit. But this is just the very beginning of the story of two incredibly talented girls who work for a deeply mysterious spy agency. Because just as they finished their training, an ancient evil began arising. It started with the midnight shriek. It wasn't a human sound, and it wasn't an animal sound either. It was a piercing, mechanical wail that echoed across the San Francisco bay at exactly 12:00 AM, freezing everyone in their tracks. The E.C.N. radar computers instantly went completely haywire, flashing bright red warning signals. Someone—or something—had just hacked into the city's main power grid, threatening to plunge the entire West Coast into total darkness. The Head called a mandatory emergency meeting, slamming her hands on the metal briefing table. This wasn't a normal rogue spy mission. This was a threat from a shadow organization known only as The Obsidian Syndicate. Amity and Ling exchanged a nervous but determined look. Their training was officially over, and their very first real mission was about to begin. They had to trace the source of the shriek before midnight struck again.
