It was the day of the family party. Fay was still in bed when her alarm went off. She woke up and turned toward the clock; it was 6 a.m. Fay turned off the alarm and slowly got up, leaving the curtains closed so Bramble wouldn't wake up yet. The guests were due to arrive in two hours. Fay went into the bathroom and got dressed, putting on black sweatpants and a loose red sweater. Then she went downstairs to the kitchen, where she washed and dried her hands before taking her baking supplies out of the cupboard. Fay had an excellent memory, especially for recipes; she knew this one by heart. She gathered all the ingredients from the shelves and placed them on the table. She started by putting the flour and sugar into the bowl, then added the other ingredients and mixed the batter until it was smooth and creamy. Next, she took the baking pan out of the cupboard and poured the batter into it. She turned on the oven and got out a saucepan and the chocolate glaze. Then she put the pan in the oven and set a timer for thirty minutes. When the timer indicated that the cake would be ready to come out in ten minutes, she cut open the package of chocolate pieces and put them in the saucepan. She set the stove to medium heat and waited ten minutes before removing the pan from the heat. When the timer went off, she took the cake out of the oven and turned off both the oven and the stove. By then, the chocolate pieces had melted into a smooth mixture. Finally, Fay took her oven mitts out of the drawer, removed the cake from the pan, and placed it—along with a plate—on the table. There, she took the pot containing the chocolate mixture and spread it over the cake. About an hour later, Fay’s parents came into the kitchen as well. Fay had finished the cake by then; she had even decorated the edges with small marzipan balls. She placed the cake on her lovely serving platter and left it on the table. Since they had already prepared everything else the day before, Fay was now able to put on her pretty summer dress and wake up her ferret. Then she sat down on the sofa and waited for the guests to finally arrive.
