Fay stood on the veranda, gazing out at the sea. It sparkled gently in the sunlight—a beautiful sight, Fay thought. She enjoyed this view every day. She lived with her parents in a villa on the beach near Liverpool; there wasn't another house for miles around. To get to the nearby town, her mother would fly on her broomstick or in her flying car. It was still very early, and the air was pleasantly warm. Fay was wearing a yellow T-shirt and denim shorts. Just then, the patio door shut; a strong gust of wind had slammed it closed. Fay went to the door and tried to open it, but in vain—it wouldn't budge. So, Fay walked down to the beach and around the house to the garden. There, she opened the garden gate and closed it again behind her. Then she went to the door and opened it. She stepped inside and shut the door behind her. Next, she headed up the stairs to her room. The light was still off inside. Fay walked to the window and drew back the curtains. Then she went over to the small basket beside her bed. Curled up inside was a cute little ferret; it was still asleep. The ferret’s name was Bramble, and he was Fay’s pet. School holidays had begun a few days ago. Fay was eleven years old and a witch. Her mother was a witch, too, while her father was a Muggle—though he was fully in the know and greatly admired the magical world. Fay would soon be going to Hogwarts. She was eagerly awaiting her letter from the school. Just then, the door to her room opened. "Good morning, Fay," said her mother, who was already dressed in her long blue gown. "Good morning, Mama." "Breakfast is ready soon. Will you come to the living room?" Her mother left the room. Fay gave Bramble a gentle nudge, but he simply slept on. So Fay went to her shelf and took out the tin of treats for Bramble. She took one out and put the tin back on the shelf. Then she placed the treat in front of Bramble’s bed and went downstairs to the living room. Her parents had already set the table there and were waiting for her. Fay joined them, and they had breakfast together. "Fay, we’re having visitors tomorrow," her father said. "Who is it?" "The Potters, the Weasleys, and the Granger-Weasleys. We’re having a family gathering tomorrow—right here on the beach. We have a lot of preparations to do today. They’ll arrive tomorrow morning and stay with us until school starts." "Lily, Hugo, Albus, James, and Rose too?" Fay asked happily. "Yes, of course. Everyone will be there. Arthur and Molly, too. And George, Bill, and Charlie." "Cool! I can't wait!" Fay exclaimed happily, jumping up. "Will you bake a cake tomorrow morning, then?" Fay’s mother asked. Fay loved baking cakes and tarts. She nodded enthusiastically and ran upstairs to her room. By then, Bramble had gotten up and finished his treat. Now he was hungry and wanted his breakfast. But first, Fay wanted to clean and wash him. She took him to the bathroom and put him in the tub. Bramble loved getting washed and taking a bath every morning. So, Fay took the showerhead and turned on the water. Bramble really enjoyed the shower. Then she lifted him out of the tub and dried him off. Finally, Fay took him to the kitchen and got his breakfast ready.
