"WAKE UP, YOU BIG HEADS!" yelled their stepmom. "Your dad had made cookies. You guys are going to chop trees with him!" "Okay," said Hansel. "I'm up!" said Gretel. The dad gave them each half of a cookie before setting off into the woods. Gretel had put the cookies into a bucket she brought because Hansel's shirt pocket was full of rocks, and he did not have any pants pockets. Hansel was slower than the other two. It was because he was putting rocks on the path. The dad noticed how slow he was going, and he said this: "WHY ARE YOU SO SLOW?!" Hansel said this: "I think I see my cat on the roof. He's trying, I think, to say goodbye to me." The dad looked at Hansel like he was a tiger getting ready to attack a deer. "Idiot boy, you don't have a cat!" said the dad. "Oh yeah," said the boy. *now this is one of the things about these tales that makes no sense. The dad is literally watching Hansel put rocks on the path, and he still doesn't realize that Hansel is leaving a trail so they can find their way home! LIKE WHAT?!* "Hansel and Gretel, sit right here," said the dad, pointing to an area of the woods with no trees. "Eat your cookies, and if you get sleepy, you can sleep for a while." They ate their cookies, and then they fell into a deep slumber.
