Chapter 4 -------------- Everyone fell asleep except Flame. He lay awake, listening to the sounds outside their underground base. Then he heard footsteps. Flame lifted his head and sniffed the air. He smelled a male half-wolf, half-Husky. Whatever this half-canine was planning, Flame knew he was no match for him—or Skip and Molly. Then Flame caught another scent. A female German Shepherd. He knew they were both adults. “Wake up!” he growled softly. They were in danger. Flame stepped outside. The same scent was right in front of him. The half-wolf, half-Husky was waiting. He suddenly prepared to pounce on Flame. But the German Shepherd couldn't bring herself to hurt the pups. She charged at the half-wolf, half-Husky and knocked him away, leaving him with a scar over his right eye. He stumbled back, unable to see properly. “No, Alfred. I can't let you do this,” she growled. Inside Alfred's head, strange whispers echoed. Pack… pack… Kill… kill… He couldn't remember anything else from that night. The German Shepherd stepped closer to Moon. “Daisybell?” Moon whined. “Moon!” Daisybell licked Moon's happy face. “You left us forever,” Moon howled. Flame remembered. Daisybell had taken care of them in a cave until the Big Growl came. The disaster had killed their entire pack—except them. They had run away afterward, but Daisybell had gone missing. That was when Flame had been forced to lead the others. The memory flashed through Flame's eyes. “You…” He glared at her brown eyes. But Daisybell's kindness had never changed. Beta and Sweet jumped onto Daisybell. “Welcome to the pack!” they said together. Molly smiled. Daisybell's honesty and willingness to take risks made her fearless. “Welcome…” Molly whispered. Skip was happy. Their pack had grown stronger. But Alfred was still a lone-dog. “We must move our base,” Moon whined. “He'll come back.” “Already,” Beta yapped. “Awwww,” Sweet whined. Skip was tired, but he was determined to keep going. Molly and Flame had already taken the lead. “Wait for us!” Stickchaser barked. The pack followed them into the darkness. There was no turning back now.
