Unlike older Mario games, the goal is not simply to reach the end of a level. Instead, you explore large worlds, collect Power Moons, discover secrets, defeat enemies, and use Mario's new partner, Cappy, to reach places that would normally be impossible to reach. When you first begin playing, the most important thing to learn is how Mario moves. You can run, jump, crouch, swim, climb, and perform different jumping techniques. Mario's movement is the foundation of the entire game, so learning how to control him accurately will make everything else much easier. You can move Mario around using the control stick, and you can jump using the jump button. Pressing the jump button again while Mario is in the air allows you to perform another jump, creating a useful double-jump. You can also combine jumps with other movements to travel farther and reach higher platforms. One of the most important abilities in the game is Mario's cap, Cappy. Cappy can be thrown at enemies, objects, and special targets throughout the kingdoms. When you throw Cappy, you can use him to attack enemies or interact with objects from a distance. Cappy can also be thrown repeatedly, making him useful when several enemies are surrounding Mario. Learning when to throw Cappy is an important part of surviving dangerous areas. Cappy has another extremely important ability: **capturing**. When Mario throws Cappy at certain creatures, he can take control of them. Different creatures give Mario completely different abilities. For example, capturing a frog allows Mario to jump much higher, while capturing a Cheep Cheep allows him to swim underwater without worrying about running out of air. Other captures can allow Mario to fly, become extremely powerful, move through special areas, or interact with parts of the environment that Mario cannot normally use. Whenever you see an unusual creature, it is worth experimenting with Cappy to see what happens. Exploration is one of the biggest parts of Super Mario Odyssey. The kingdoms are filled with hidden paths, secret rooms, underground areas, tall buildings, moving platforms, and places that may not look important at first. You should not always rush toward the obvious objective. Looking around can often reveal a hidden Power Moon or another useful item. Sometimes a suspicious wall, pipe, painting, or small platform is actually the entrance to a secret area. Power Moons are one of the main collectibles in the game. You need them to power up the Odyssey, Mario's flying ship, so that you can travel to new kingdoms. Power Moons can be obtained in many different ways. Some are sitting in obvious locations, while others require you to defeat an enemy, solve a puzzle, complete a platforming challenge, find a hidden area, or perform a particular action. This means that collecting Power Moons is not simply a matter of walking around and picking them up. You have to pay attention to the environment and experiment with Mario's abilities. Coins are also important. Mario can collect regular gold coins throughout the kingdoms and spend them in shops. There are also special regional coins that can only be used in the kingdom where they were collected. These special coins can be used to purchase unique outfits and souvenirs. Outfits are not just for decoration, either. Some areas require Mario to wear a particular outfit before he can enter them, so keeping track of your clothing options can be useful. Another important part of the game is Mario's health. Mario normally has three health points, although some situations can give him additional health. If Mario takes damage, he loses health. Falling into dangerous areas, being hit by enemies, or touching certain hazards can cause damage. If Mario loses all of his health, he will lose some coins and return to a safe location. Because of this, you should be careful when exploring dangerous areas, especially when you are carrying a large number of coins. Enemies appear throughout every kingdom. Some enemies can simply be jumped on, while others are easier to defeat with Cappy. Certain enemies can even be captured and used to defeat other enemies. It is important to pay attention to what each enemy does rather than automatically attacking everything. Some enemies have special abilities that can help Mario progress through an area.
