Such a tragic day on September, 11, 2001in Manhattan 2 hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers North Tower (1 WTC): Hit at 8:46 a.m. ET by American Airlines Flight 11. South Tower (2 WTC): Hit at 9:03 a.m. ET by United Airlines Flight 175 (17 minutes after the first impact). While the towers were still up, many people ran for safety and it was hard to find an exit through all the smoke. There were 110 floors on each tower. Nearly three thousand people were lost and an estimated 15,000 to 17,000 people survived the attacks The South Tower first collapsed at 9:59 am, 56 minutes after it was hit The North Tower later collapsed at 10:28 am, 1 hour and 42 minutes after it was hit. The planes got hijacked by a militant Islamist group al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden.
