Chapter 3 ---------------- Skip ran out of the hole. “Where are you going?” Molly growled. She was worried about him. She curled up inside their new underground base, trying to stay warm. Skip stopped when he came face-to-face with Flame. Flame stared at him. “W-Who are you?” he asked nervously. “I-It’s an adult dog…” Moon whispered, shivering. Skip smiled and tilted his head. “Nice to meet you! I’m Skip. And you?” Flame had always wanted to find other dogs. Despite his fierce appearance, he wasn't scary at all. He was simply bossy and protective of his pack. And, of course, he was their leader. Moon wondered if Skip was an enemy. “I-I'm Flame,” he finally said. “This dog next to me is Moon. The twins are Beta and Sweet, and this hyper dog with the zoomies is Stickchaser.” Molly crawled out of the hole and realized that Skip had been right. “I’m Molly, Skip’s wife,” she said, introducing herself to the teenage pups. “You shouldn't be on your own,” Skip told them eagerly. “You can use our hole!” Flame looked at Skip for a moment. Then he trusted him. “He's our new Alpha now,” Flame announced. “Thank you for helping us, mister!” Beta and Sweet yapped. The pups entered the underground shelter. “Where's the food?” Stickchaser whined. “We have to hunt for some,” Skip replied. Skip and Flame headed out together. Skip suddenly caught the scent of a hare. He pounced and caught it. Flame was still sniffing around when a mole suddenly popped out of the ground. He quickly grabbed it. It was his first official hunt. They brought the hare and the mole back, but it still wasn't going to be enough for everyone. Flame caught a fish and a tiny snake, while Skip caught a bird and a small deer. Soon, the pack had enough food for dinner. Everyone ate until their bellies were full. Stickchaser let out a huge burp before flopping down and falling asleep. Beta and Sweet snuggled up beside Molly. Flame and Moon settled down together. Skip lay beside Molly and gently nuzzled her before they both curled up to keep warm. They weren't all family. But they were friends. And Flame and Moon had a special bond that nobody else seemed to have. Moon had her annoying brother, Stickchaser, but she felt especially close to Flame. She rested beside him as the rain continued falling above them. The pack was safe. For Now.
