Platform Six- a short story ~Part 1~ Asher whistled softly as he walked home from school. The rain was pouring down, plastering his curly black hair to his cheeks. He pulled out his purple velvet umbrella to block the rain. something fell out as he put it above his head. He picked up the small paper from the cement. It was the receipt for a lavender umbrella, purchased from a vending machine beneath Platform 6 at exactly 11:42. This umbrella was purchased and gifted to him by his grandfather that had passed away a year ago. Asher still remembered saying goodbye to him like it had just happened. he tried not to cry as he though of it. He remembered standing on the cactus in his front yard, watching in horror as his father got hit by a car while walking to the mailbox. He remembered tapping on a cactus, "this is not real" in morse code and it had hurt. Which meant it hadn't been a dream. Asher had had to wear protective gloves so he didn't rub his scratches on things by accident for a week afterward. Asher didn't care that the umbrella was velvet, which was an itchy and weird material, or that it was lavender, which was his least favorite color, the only thing that mattered was it was from his grandfather. Asher coughed heavily. He sighed. Earlier this morning, he had checked his temperature. The thermometer said it had been a 99.5, which Asher assumed wasn’t a fever, and that he could still go to school. He had probably gotten his best freind Derek sick now. Once Asher got to his house, he slipped off his shoes and put his umbrella on the shoe shelf. ‘Mother! I’m home!’ He called. No answer. As always. Mother never answered anymore. Since Father died, she stayed in bed a lot. She never ate. She never slept. She just- sat there. Asher dug through his backpack until he found a singular granola bar. Its date read 3/15/26. Which meant it was two days over the due date, Asher opened the pantry. Inside was a bag of stale pita chips, a can of noodles, and a 2 year old can of tuna. Finding nothing tasteful, he opened the fridge, only to find two cheeses ticks and 2 bruised apples. Asher took one of the apples and bit into it. As soon as he bit in, his phone rang. The screen lit up. It was a call from a random number.. Asher answered. ‘Hello?’ ‘Hello child.’ ‘Um…’ is all he could push out of his mouth. ‘Don’t be afraid. I can tell you are not in a good home situation at the moment. Come with me. You will get all you desire. Food, blankets, freinds. Come. To Platform 6.’ Asher jumped in surprise. ‘Uh.. where exactly is this ‘Platform 6’?’ ‘Good. You want to go.’ ‘Wait-‘ The caller hung up. Asher tried to call back, but all that answered was the automated voice saying ‘I am unable to come to the open right now. Please leave your name and number and I’ll answer back shortly.’ Asher signed in frustration. A knock sounded at the door. Asher opened it. Standing in the doorway was a lady. She was holding a velvet lavender umbrella. ~end of part 1~
