I’m an axolotl therian, specifically a melanoid axolotl. Being a therian is a personal part of who I am and how I understand myself. For me, identifying as an axolotl isn’t simply because I like axolotls or think they’re cute. It feels like something deeper and more personal that I connect with. I feel especially connected to the way axolotls exist and move through the world. Water feels comforting and familiar to me, and I’ve always found aquatic environments really interesting and calming. I also connect with the idea of being a small, peaceful creature that observes its surroundings rather than needing to be loud or intimidating. I identify specifically with a melanoid axolotl because I feel drawn to their appearance and characteristics. Melanoid axolotls have dark or black bodies with pink or reddish gills, and that combination is especially meaningful to me. My therian identity is something I’m still exploring and learning about. I don’t expect every experience to fit perfectly into a checklist, and I don’t think I need to prove my identity to anyone. It’s something personal that I’m allowed to understand at my own pace. Being a therian doesn’t mean I think I’m literally a non-human animal in a biological sense. It’s a personal identity and experience that helps me describe how I feel. I’m proud to be an axolotl therian, and I’m happy to share that part of myself with people who are respectful and accepting.
