The idea of Scratch being a kid-friendly programming was first proposed by Mitchel Resnick, Yasmin Kafai, and John Maeda to the National Science Foundation. The proposal got accepted and they were awarded a grant to create it. They then spent the next 4 years developing a series of early versions collectively known as Scratch 0.x, before releasing the first public version, Scratch 1.0 in 2007
