◣ABOUT S.S. ROBIN◢ (Use with credit) The SS Robin is the world's last surviving complete Victorian steam coaster, originally launched in Bow Creek, East London, on September 16, 1890. After receiving her iconic triple-expansion steam engine from Gourlay Brothers in Dundee, she spent her first decade carrying bulk cargo like coal, grain, and iron ore around British and European ports. In 1900, she was sold to Spanish owners, renamed Maria, and spent the next 74 years navigating the rugged Spanish coastline, remarkably surviving naval hazards while carrying iron ore for France during World War I. Recognizing her immense historical value, the Maritime Trust rescued the vessel from the scrap heap in 1974, allowing her to steam back to London under her own power to be restored as a museum ship. Today, as a prominent member of the National Historic Fleet, the SS Robin is permanently preserved on a specialized pontoon at Trinity Buoy Wharf in East London, standing as a unique, intact monument to Britain's maritime and industrial heritage.
