Chapter Five: Welcome to the Agency The next morning, Raven walked into the Armed Detective Agency with her headphones around her neck. She looked around. Everyone was already working. Kunikida was writing in his notebook. Atsushi was sorting papers. Ranpo was eating snacks. Dazai was sitting at his desk doing absolutely nothing. Raven walked over to her usual chair. “Morning.” Atsushi smiled. “Good morning!” Kunikida nodded. “Morning, Raven.” Dazai waved. “Good morning, Raven-cat.” Raven pointed at him. “Don't start.” Dazai laughed. Raven sat down. For once, she didn't complain. Kunikida noticed. “You're unusually quiet today.” “I'm thinking.” “About?” Raven looked around the room. “Whether I actually like this place.” Atsushi looked nervous. “And?” Raven smiled. “Yeah.” Everyone paused. “You do?” Raven shrugged. “Don't make it weird.” Dazai smiled. “Too late.” Raven laughed. Then Fukuzawa entered the room. “I have something for you.” He handed Raven a small envelope. She opened it. Inside was her official Agency badge. Raven stared at it. For a moment, she didn't say anything. “This means you're officially part of the Armed Detective Agency,” Fukuzawa said. Raven looked down at the badge. Then smiled. “Cool.” Atsushi smiled. “Congratulations!” Kunikida nodded. “You've improved considerably.” “Thanks.” “You still need to work on following instructions.” Raven's smile disappeared. “Never mind.” Everyone laughed. Later that afternoon, Raven stood outside the Agency. Snow was falling again. She put on her headphones. A familiar song began playing. She looked up at the sky. Then she smiled. Atsushi walked outside. “You're going home?” “Eventually.” “Want to walk together?” Raven nodded. “Sure.” They started walking through the snow. Raven looked back at the Agency one last time. A strange place. A strange group of people. But somehow, it felt comfortable. She had spent her first few days arguing with everyone. She had turned into cats, birds, and rabbits. She had ignored Kunikida's instructions more times than she could count. She had complained about work. She had complained about people. She had complained about pretty much everything. But she had also laughed. She had made friends. And, most importantly, she had found somewhere she could belong. Raven pulled her hood over her head. “Hey, Atsushi.” “Yeah?” “I think I'm gonna like it here.” Atsushi smiled. “I think we like having you here too.” Raven looked away, trying to hide her smile. “Don't tell anyone I said that.” “Your secret is safe.” Behind them, Dazai opened the Agency window. “I HEARD THAT!” Raven stopped walking. Her eye twitched. “DAZAI!” He laughed and closed the window. Atsushi started laughing. Raven couldn't help it. She laughed too. Snow continued falling around them. And for the first time, Raven didn't feel like the new girl anymore. She was Raven. A shapeshifter. A troublemaker. A winter lover. A music fan. And now— An official member of the Armed Detective Agency.
