[ WRITTEN VERSION ] Anomaly - ch.1 } - Diamond - I wait, and wait, and wait. I have stood here all day guarding the Icewing palace, and nothing has happened. I've stood here for minutes, hours, days, and nothing has happened. I stand here for weeks, and still nothing at all. When I first told myself that I wanted to work for the king and queen, to guard the castle, I never imagined it this way. Of course the palace is beautiful, shades of crisp white, grey, and blue make up the castle’s walls - simple but extraordinary. I wanted to guard the beauty of the place, stand outside the walls bravely and deflect all enemies (perhaps get into a fight), but what I imagined was way off. Instead, I stand here every day - sometimes days in a row, without rest, food, or water - and desperately wait for something to happen. Nothing. Nothing ever comes this way. I've never encountered an enemy, never rescued anyone, never even got the slightest bit of action or attention. And I expect today to be the same. Yawn- THUMP. What was that? A tresspasser? Another dragon? No, It can't be. Maybe another one of my fellow friends here to take my place for the day? That can't be it, my shift doesn't end till midnight. A bird perhaps? No, it sounded like something much larger. Footsteps. Could this be the day? The day where I finally get to face an enemy, to fight for my life and the ones of the kingdom, for the king and queen, impress the ladies…? I decide to inspect the noise. To look for the source of the sound. I creep along the sides of the palace walls, slowly getting closer to the place I think the sound came from, but being careful not to make any noise or make myself vulnerable to an attack. I take left. Another. I keep walking until I reach an entrance to a small cave-like room. I’m pretty sure it’s the entrance to the food stash - or at least one of them, since there are so many piles of food in the palace. I can hear someone scavenging. I peek out from the wall and spot a nightwing. * I have to stop them, I can’t let them steal food. “Hey!” I yell in shock. The dragon jumps at my words, turns around quickly, and spots me. She’s female, and has really dark scales with a hint of purple/blue on them. She looks about my age, - 16 or possibly a little younger. Bright, star-looking scales dot her face like freckles and decorate her wings. They make weird forms and shapes, just like the ones in the sky - they make no sense, but still look beautiful. Her eyes are the color of gold, shimmering and bright. Her structure is slim, skinny, like she hasn’t been fed. She’s dying. For a second, I almost feel sorry for the girl. I want to help her, know what’s wrong, to let her take some of our food because it couldn't possibly do us any harm, but I stop myself. I can’t help her. She's a nightwing, the king and queen would kill her on the spot. That's my job. I have to kill her. * I have to admit, I've never killed anyone before, - never had to - but I have to do it now. I rush after her, holding my spear tightly in my talons, the tip towards the nightwing in defense. I can’t let her steal anything, I think. It takes her a moment to process what’s happening, but she recovers quickly and sprints toward the closest exit on the opposite side of the room, and manages to take a big, plump white hare with her. I attempt to chase her down, but she's surprisingly fast. She takes off into the sky, her wings spread out so I can see the star-like patterns on them a lot better in the soft light of the sun. I follow. She was too quick. I lost her. * The tall walls of the castle lean on me. They cast long shadows on the glossy floors as I make my way to the throne room where the king and queen await me. I continue my nervous trip until two ginormous doors close my path. The two guards on the opposite sides of the entrance glance at me, and then give each other a confused look. “I must speak with the King. It is urgent.” The guard on the right shrugs and looks over at the other for confirmation. He nods. The doors open with an eerie “creak” and after a moment, I can see the king and queen sitting in their thrones. I look up at them and bow. “This better be quick.” he says. “Yes your majesty.” I swallow nervously, and tell him about the nightwing that had come earlier this morning to steal some of our food. He seems pretty angry about it. “You just let her go?!” “Your majesty, I tried-” he cuts me off. “‘Try’ isn't enough! The nightwing must be captured before next week, or you too will be a prisoner in our jails or worse…” I didn't want to hear what was next, but there was no way to stop it. “...dead.”
