Despite looking like an inanimate object, Herbie is absolutley alive, and can feel emotions, pain, and what's he known for most, love. Those who are kind, and respectful of Herbie he's loyal to essentialy forever. Those who aren't, typically end up looking huimliated. (Oil on shoe, exhaust in the face, even getting chased in some cases) Throughout his racing career, he has survived the most impossible situations. Some several times over. He's been split in half (TWICE), dropped into the ocean, surfed in California, drove up the Golden Gate Bridge, jumped across buildings, and has driven upside down to pass cars in racing events. All of that, and he STILL keeps up with cars a fraction of the age as him.
