Water lapped at the rocks as storms passed overhead, familiar rumbles of thunder rattled off in the distance. I curled my tail over my legs while I braided the friendship bracelet, purple and gold weaving together in my talons. The string was one of the many gifts my dad would bring me on his visits. “Storms getting rougher…” My mom hissed, one of her heads peering out the cave entrance. Her scales glimmered with the light of the glowstones, blue and green creating beautiful colors in the water. “Are you sure you’ll be okay?” “You worry too much, my love.” My dad chuckled as he moved around his boat, preparing to leave. He tied down ropes, filled barrels with food, and even polished the steering wheel for good measure. This happened often. My dad would ride in with gifts for me, my mom, and Aunt Chary, then he’d stay for a week and leave just as quickly as he came. “Do you really gotta go?” I said from my little corner in the cave. My dad chuckled, his sea green eyes reflecting my own. “Yes little squid, your grandpa’s gonna need my help at the palace.” I sighed and tucked my legs to my chest, both of my chins resting on each knee. “Can you at least tell Uncle Ty, I said hi?” “Of course, my little devil.” He murmured as he came over to give me a kiss on my heads. “One for the thinker…. And one for good luck!” I giggled like I always did whenever he’d call my extra head good luck. “Be safe…” My mom purred as he kissed each of her heads. Dad smiled, lopsided and goofy yet had a sort of charismatic charm just like his older half-brother. “I’m always safe.” The corners of my eyes began to blur as I watched him sail away. Memories like this always brought me warmth and closure. But for some reason, this memory did the opposite. My head pounded and scales itched like I was colder than normal. Pain laced through the bend where my elbow was as I continued to braid purple and gold into the bracelet. My mom shuffled out of view and for a moment, the scenery shifted to a different cave. It was darker, dustier, no water from the ocean. When I blinked my eyes, the familiar sights of my moms cave came back, comforting me. The scent of kelp burgers wafted from one of the nearby tunnels where she disappeared. Kelp burgers? My mom hated kelp burgers… she preferred the taste of coral… My heads felt heavy as she sauntered back into the room. “Very good Sylvia!” The woman laughed, her voice so sickeningly sweet it made the scales on my skin crawl. As I blinked the blurriness away from my eyes, I caught glimpses of the woman’s purple dress. Purple…My mom also hated purple. My hands felt clammy, my skin felt dry, and my eyes began to droop again. “Mom…” I whispered, desperation lacing through my voice as I began to realize where I was. My claws tried tearing at the restraints holding me in place and tears pricked my eyes. “Oh you sweet, naive, young sea beast.” The woman impersonating my mom coddled me. I felt my consciousness starting to slip away again and in that moment… I saw them. The tubes drawing blood from beneath my scales like a donation. Bags upon bags making my stomach curdle and puke rise in my throat. “Help… mom…” My faces felt hot as tears spilled over now like a broken dam. Salt water hitting the floor of the cave. “Please…” The woman cackled. “Mhm. You sure are helping. Soon the veil will be broken and all will be right again. How fun!” The darkness crept closer, swallowing the cave, the woman, and even the sound of my own breathing. My final thought was simple. I wanted to go home. ┈ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_┈ Like what you read? Check out the official studio!! AND maybe check out some of my other books? The Game: The Unwanted Heroes:
