Or, you can read it below :) Image from Pixabay, all writing by me. And it's exactly 500 words! :D ... I never realized “friend” was such an ambiguous word Cause I’d seen it used so many times I thought I’d seen it in my life What it meant, I thought I knew And then I happened to meet you Maybe I just didn’t know better But I didn’t know friends wrote so many letters I didn’t know friends called every three days And what friend knew all of your favorite things I didn’t know friends made so many plans Like ice cream, and board games, and maybe a dance Like baking cookies with your favorite candies Or going to the park and climbing a tree I was the friend who prayed every night And offered my shoulder each time you cried The friend who wanted the beauty and mess To pick you up for a movie, or after your wreck For the longest time, we were “just friends” At least, that’s what we always said I think they could see it, and we did too There was always more between me and you I never realized “friend” was such an ambiguous word Cause then people started taking note They started rumors and made some jokes And you told me “Till summer ends Let’s just keep on being friends” And maybe I just didn’t know better But I thought friends replied to letters I thought that friends returned your calls Or said “hi” when you passed in the halls I thought that friends made time for a walk Just 30 minutes for us to talk That’s 0.3% of your week I didn’t need much, I just wanted to speak Every night, I continued to pray But I wanted to respect that you needed space I still offered my hand, just the same But I didn’t think it was one you’d take For all that time, we were “just friends” At least, that’s what you always said I think you saw it, and I did too There was a gap between me and you I never realized “friend” was such an ambiguous word Cause then the summer finally finished And you apologized for being so distant You said you’d been thinking, and praying, and then You said “Maybe we should just keep it as friends” Maybe I just didn’t know better But I thought this would last forever I thought I was a good friend before But I guess I needed something more I want to be there, truly I do I’m just not sure I know how to I want to be your friend, really I’m just still learning what that means And still I pray, before I sleep That you’d find love and joy and peace I still cry, I’m still in pain But I care for you just the same So now I’m trying to be “just friends” Even though I don’t understand I can’t see the future, I wish I knew If there’d be more for me and you I never realized “friend” was such an ambiguous word
