Little Skip was just about to fall asleep when Sofia’s voice broke the silence. “Skip! Mother Sienna is going to tell us a story!” she demanded bossily. Skip yawned and slowly opened his eyes. His look-alike brother, Scooter, immediately reached over and pulled his ear. Skip eventually smacked his paw away. “Ow!” Scooter complained. Sloane giggled before suddenly pouncing on Skip. “Why is everyone so desperate, Mother-Dog?” Skip howled, trying to push her off. Sienna sighed. “Please, pups. Behave.” Spencer continued sleeping as if none of them existed. Sparky froze in place, staring at the others. Sammie simply sat down and began a silent staring contest with Shelby. Sofia, Scooter, and Sloane all looked at Skip. Then they started tapping him. Skip's ears flattened. “Fine! I’ll wake up!” he growled. “Yay!” the seven pups yapped together. Sienna smiled. “Do you want to hear about the Storm of Dogs?” A thrill of excitement ran down Skip’s spine. “Yes!” he barked eagerly. Sienna settled herself down among the eight pups. They gathered around her, their eyes fixed on their mother. “Long ago, there was a God-Dog named Lightning-Dog. She was the swiftest of all the God-Dogs, and the Sky-Dog watched over her.” The pups listened closely. “But Earth-Dog was jealous of their power. She believed Lightning-Dog had lived for far too long, and she wanted to destroy her.” “That’s horrible,” Scooter whimpered. “Shush!” Sofia growled, gently pushing his nose away. Sienna continued. “Then the Great Battle began. The terrible Storm of Dogs descended upon the world. Earth-Dog believed that, at last, she could defeat Lightning-Dog. But Lightning-Dog was cunning, and she was incredibly fast. No matter how hard Earth-Dog tried, Lightning-Dog always managed to escape.” Skip's eyes widened. “But the Storm of Dogs helped Earth-Dog set a trap.” Sloane frowned. “Is the story finished?” “No,” Sienna replied. Sloane's ears drooped. “I don't like this story. It's too mean.” Sienna gave her a sympathetic look. “I know, little one. But there is more.” She looked around at the pups. “One day, Earth-Dog hid beneath the ground while Lightning-Dog was training. Without warning, the earth seized Lightning-Dog’s legs and held her there.” The pups went quiet. “Earth-Dog tried to pull her beneath the ground. But Lightning-Dog escaped at the very last moment, using her incredible speed to race into the sky.” Skip let out a small breath of relief. “But the Storm of Dogs were waiting.” Sienna’s voice became quieter. “They surrounded Lightning-Dog and tried to bring her down. She fought with everything she had, but even Lightning-Dog could not outrun an entire storm forever.” Outside, the wind rustled against the walls. “The ground began to shake. A great crack opened beneath her, threatening to swallow her.” Scooter pressed closer to Sienna. “But the Sky-Dogs loved Lightning-Dog. They knew they could not save her forever, but they wanted to give her one final chance.” Sienna paused. “They sent a tremendous wind through the sky. It spun faster and faster, carrying Lightning-Dog high above the earth.” The pups stared at her. “For one final moment, Lightning-Dog saw the light shining through the clouds.” Sienna's voice softened. “Then the storm closed around her.” Silence filled the room. “Lightning-Dog was gone.” Spencer finally gave a huge yawn and flopped his ears down sleepily. One by one, the pups’ eyelids began to droop. Sienna looked down at them and gently licked Skip’s sleepy face. Scooter could barely keep his eyes open. They had always loved falling asleep to their mother’s stories, even the sad ones. Skip's eyes slowly closed. The last thing he heard was the faint whisper of Sienna’s voice. “Watch out, little ones…” And then everything went dark.
