Chapter 5 I Don’t Even Know Anymore Flinthawk’s eyes fluttered open. A groggy groan escaped him as he slowly pushed himself upright, his head pounding painfully. He blinked several times, trying to make sense of his surroundings. He was back in his nest in the medicine cat den, surrounded by the familiar scent of herbs. For a few moments, he simply stared at the walls, completely disoriented. “Flinthawk?” His head snapped toward the entrance. Oscarstar padded into the den, his expression softening when he noticed Flinthawk was awake. “Ah, Flinthawk. You're awake. How are you feeling? Lockfoot said you hit your head.” Flinthawk stared at him, his ears twitching at the name. “Oscarstar?” “Yes?” Flinthawk swallowed. “What happened?” Oscarstar hesitated before sitting beside him. “You were found unconscious. Lockfoot brought you back here.” Flinthawk's stomach twisted. “And… the Clan?” Oscarstar's expression became serious. “They know.” Flinthawk froze. “Know what?” Oscarstar looked at him for a moment before answering. “About the murders.” Flinthawk's breath caught. “They know about Stormbreaze. Bristleclaw. Lilyfurn. All of them.” Flinthawk lowered his gaze to his paws. His claws trembled against the moss. “How?” “Lockfoot told us.” Flinthawk slowly looked up. “Lockfoot?” Oscarstar nodded. “He told the Clan everything. He said you believed StarClan had commanded you to kill them. He told us you had become convinced that they were threats to the Clan and that you were carrying out StarClan's will.” Flinthawk stared at him in disbelief. “He told you that?” “Yes.” Flinthawk's chest tightened. “But he didn't tell you why.” Oscarstar's ears flicked forward. “Why?” “Because he was the one who told me.” Silence settled over the den. Flinthawk swallowed hard. “He was the one who made me believe StarClan wanted them dead. He told me I was chosen. He told me that every sign was a message and every dream was a warning. Whenever I questioned it, he told me I was doubting StarClan.” Oscarstar's expression darkened. Flinthawk looked down again. “I trusted him.” His voice cracked. “He was my mentor. I thought he was teaching me how to serve the Clan. I thought he was teaching me how to be a good medicine cat.” His claws curled into the moss. “I didn't know he was teaching me to listen to him instead.” Oscarstar remained silent. Flinthawk's breathing became shaky as the realization settled deeper. “He told you everything I did,” he whispered. “But he left himself out.” Oscarstar's ears lowered. Flinthawk gave a quiet, bitter laugh. “He snitched.” His gaze hardened. “He made me believe StarClan wanted me to kill them, then told the Clan I did it.” Flinthawk looked toward the entrance, his expression slowly changing from confusion to betrayal. “He knew exactly what he was doing.” Oscarstar didn't answer. Flinthawk lowered his head. “I killed them,” he whispered. “That part is still mine.” His eyes burned as he stared at his paws. “But I wasn't acting alone.” The den fell silent. For the first time, Flinthawk wasn't wondering whether he had failed StarClan. He was wondering whether StarClan had ever been involved at all.
