Chapter 5: The Crush Conundrum Jack and I sat on the edge of my bed in the Hades cabin, still half-nibbling the chocolate bar he brought. The silence between us was comfortable, but my mind kept replaying what happened in the dining pavilion his hand in mine, the look on his face, the way my heart practically tried to leap out of my chest from pure embarrassment. “So,” Jack finally said, fiddling with the chocolate wrapper. “Want to talk about… you know. The whole ‘being claimed by the god of the dead’ situation?” I shrugged. “Not really. But if you want to talk about how I almost caused an earthquake in front of the entire camp and then nearly passed out because you were holding my hand… we could do that.” Jack snorted, almost choking on his chocolate. “I was just trying to help! You looked like you were about to summon a zombie army or something.” I grinned, my cheeks burning. “Yeah, well, you are lucky my powers only do earthquakes, not ‘make the floor swallow me up’ from embarrassment.” He bumped my shoulder, eyes shining with mischief. “You think you had it bad? Try being the son of Aphrodite. Last week, I accidentally made two people fall in love with the same squirrel. They had a dramatic breakup over a rodent named Mr. Fluffykins.” I burst out laughing. “Wait, is that why those two Hermes kids were crying by the woods?” Jack nodded. “And the squirrel is still getting love letters. My family is cursed.” We both started giggling and tried to stop, which only made it worse. I wiped my eyes, feeling lighter than I had in days. Jack’s voice got quieter. “So, um… about earlier. When you said that thing. About falling in love.” I nearly dropped the chocolate. “Oh gods, you heard that?” His cheeks turned pink. “I mean, maybe. And, just saying, I think you are pretty cool too. Even if you almost destroyed the dining pavilion.” I buried my face in my hands. “This is so embarrassing.” Jack laughed. “Hey, at least you did not accidentally enchant your pillow to smell like feet for a week. That was my first crush at camp. Pro tip: never use magic perfume unless you read the label.” “Noted,” I said, peeking through my fingers. “Maybe we are both disasters.” He nudged me. “The best kind of disasters.” We sat there, a little awkward, a little giddy, both of us grinning. For the first time, it felt okay to have a crush even if it sometimes led to earthquakes or a lovesick squirrel.
