Mabel ran after her twin sister, Maeve, the wind blowing her red hair crazily, faded ivory shirt blowing. Maeve, hair also being whipped around, stormed ahead the cliff, stone bouncing back the vibrations from her stomping, her footsteps echoing eerily. Mabel rushed ahead, the edge of the cliff nearing. Her heartbeat sped up, like a hummingbird's. Mabel held out her arm, trying to catch her sister's arm. She succeeded, and Maeve spun around. Mabel gasped in shock. Maeve's eyes had gone a pure, blinding white, like the lamps when mother changed the batteries, brighter than normal, so much energy they shine bright. Maeve's eyebrows furrowed in apparent anger, rosy lips thinning, and she shoved Mabel back hard. Mabel stumbled, and Maeve neared the edge of the cliff. Mabel stared at her back. "Maeve?" she called weakly. Maeve ignored her, reaching the very edge and staring into the space. Mabel shoved herself up, sprinting with all her might at Maeve. When she was a bit before her, about to slow, Maeve disappeared. Just gone. Nothing. Mabel slowed, looking around, bewildered as the wind continued playing with her hair. Mabel tugged down her thin sleeves, the ivory colour comforting. Her black shorts were actually Maeve's, she had borrowed them. Maeve...Where was she? Just this morning she had gotten up from the table, Mabel looking at her in confusion, and started marching towards the cliffs, where they weren't allowed. Of course, her mother didn't want to lose two more sixteen-year-olds. Especially today. The day she had lost her other pair of twins. They were sixteen, too. Mabel hadn't heard much about them, just they weren't to be discussed. Mabel decided the best course of action would be to climb the hill - where they were allowed - and look around the cliffs for Maeve. When she had finally reached the top, drenched in sweat and panting, Mabel blinked around at the view, squinting because of the sun in her eyes. The cliffs were more in the distance now, as Mabel preferred them. Maeve, though, had always wanted to go look at them. She would say to Mabel; "You never know what you'll find," which Mabel always brushed off because what would you find on such a barren landscape? On the other side, there was a beautiful meadow, multicoloured tulips in full bloom. She and Maeve would play there as toddlers. Where was Maeve, though? If Mabel was honest, she didn't truly expect her to be there, having a picnic or something. The sensible thing would be to run to her parents. But Mabel knew how they would react. Screaming, calling the police, etc. etc. And she would never be allowed outside again. She could just take one more look, just in case... Mabel used the slide her parents had installed at the hill for her d3 ad sisters, back when they were careless and young. Happy. Mabel slid down, squealing at the speed. Eventually it ended, to Mabel's relief. She heaved herself up, noticing a cluster of rocks Maeve and her used to have picnics near. She walked over curiously, not really knowing why, drawn by something. She reached out to the rock slowly, and she had the strangest sensation the rock was reaching out too, then the jolt when she realised it /was./ The rock had formed a hand, rock stretching as the hand seemed to shove through. Mabel watched in wonder. She reached out and touched the stone. It suddenly crumbled, revealing her sister, asleep. Mabel gasped, rushing over to her. Maeve woke with a snort, blinking at Mabel. "Wasgoodsis?" she mumbled. Mabel stared at her. "What were you thinking? And what were those /lenses?/" she snapped at her. Maeve looked at her like she had gone mad. "Didn't wear no lenses? They're awful. Besides, I like my green eyes." she batted her eyelashes at Mabel, and she noticed her eyes were back to sage. Mabel sighed. "Then why did you go to the cliff?" she countered. Maeve laughed. "You've gone mad! I've been in-" she realised where she was. "Why am I not in my room?!" she shouted. Mabel stared at her. "W-wha?" she was lost now. Suddenly, There was a deep growl from all around them Mabel tensed in fear. Maeve, on the other hand, looked around fiercely. "Who the h3ll thinks this is funny?" she shouted into the abyss. Mabel shushed her. The growl had become louder. Mabel shut her eyes, a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing. She felt something clamp down on her shoulder. She let out a scream, and blacked out from fear. When she came to, she found herself in her room. She sprang up, surprised to be on her bed, and rushed to Maeve's room, flinging back her covers. She wasn't there. Mabel let out a shriek. She heard her mother walk into Maeve's room, switching on the light. "Honey? What are you doing?" Mabel span around. "Where's Maeve?!" she exclaimed desperately. her mother blinked in confusion. "Well, she should be in her room!" her voice rose, like it always did when she was panicked. They went around the house together, shouting for Maeve. But she was gone.
