Allie stepped out the bus, walking toward the school gate. She felt her phantom fur bristle when she saw humans. “Hey! Newbie! Now, let me explain the rules.” A boy her age patted her back, sounding annoying. Allie looked behind her and chirruped, as if talking to her otter mum. “Oops… I’ve got the wrong person…,” the boy looked away uneasily and pointed to a crowd of people. He ran off and started whispering to them and pointing to Allie. They all laughed and ran through the gates. Allie stared at them, confused. Probably nothing. She headed to her classroom. When she opened the door, the boy and his group were sat at their desks. Allie ran to the one that said her name, quickly sitting down. She felt a muscular tail behind her, twitching uneasily. She gasped as she saw the classroom. It had fake vines hanging from the walls, and flowerpots on the teachers desk. The walls were painted blue, and a few ripples were painted on the lake-like blue walls, looking like fishes swimming quickly. Allies mouth watered at the thought of freshly caught fish. “Everyone, welcome Allie,” the teacher cheered, sitting down in her desk. Allie nearly jumped out of her seat as she realised that the teacher had said her name. “Hi?” Her voice didn’t come out clearly, it sounded more like a startled otter squeaking. The class laughed at her. Allie wanted to hide under her desk, but luckily the teacher silenced the children and told Allie her name. “Allie, I am Mrs Rosemary. Nice to meet you. Ok class, we will be reading ‘The shy otter’ for literacy this term.” Mrs Rosemary showed the class the front cover of the book, and told them a fun fact about the book. “Did you know that the otter in this book is a species that we will research in science? It’s the Asian Small Clawed Otter!” Allie stared the the teacher, her eyes gleaming with excitement, her phantom otter tail swishing behind her. She was a Asian Small Clawed Otter therian!
