Just click the flag, sit back and relax as you see a short demostration of how history was made in tornado research! If you're confused what certain words mean, heres a guide. RFD: Rear Flank Downdraft, the warm, dry air behind a tornado. Mesocyclone: the area of rotation that a tornado forms from. Tornadogenesis: The stuff that makes a tornado form, warm rfd helps this. Mesonet: A machine, usually attached to a car, that records windspeed data in mph.
TWISTEX 2010 (Tactical Weather-Instrumented Sampling in/near Tornadoes EXperiment) was a team to intercept tornadoes with machines to gain research to understand torandoes better. In 2010, they intercepted a violent EF4 tornado's RFD (rear flank downdraft, warm wind behind a tornado) to see if RFD had any role in tornadogenesis (the formation of a tornado). They used an array of 4 mesonet vehicles to get the windspeed values, and made history. Unfortunately, the team would come to a tragic end in 2013.
