Guess who just watched the odyssey~ meeeeeee- Okay well first things first, the movie itself was absolutely spectacular. The only ‘bad things’ were the differences from the actual odyssey, but it wasn’t meant to be exactly the same so it’s fine. The movie itself was really good. They did a fantastic job with the characters, with the costumes, with making people actually be flawed, and also it was actually a really good movie overall. [spoilers below, scroll down at your own risk :3] Tw, mentions of death, a bit of gore, and well ig the trigger warnings for the movie XDDD first things first… MENELAUS DIDNT HAVE RED HAIR AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ODYSSEUS WASNT SHORT AHHHHHHHHHH THERE WASBT ANY PATROCLUS OR ACHILLES STANDING TOGETHER IN THE UNDERWORLD AHHHHHH THERE WAS NO TELESTRATUS AHHHHHHHHH And Agamemnon is super cool and heck who cares if he’s a terrible person he is my favorite charcter in the movie you can’t change my mind Things I disliked about the movie -clytemnestra’s portrayal They made her look like the bad guy, she was not. Agamemnon sacrificed her own daughter for favorable winds. It would be possible to set sail without them, it Woukd be hard and much more work, and it would be dangerous to not ‘appease the goddess’ who was mad, but it was not entirely necessary. They made Clytemnestra seem angry and evil and terrible. She was flawed, but in the end, she was not entirely the ‘villain’ but that doesn’t mean she was the hero. She was kinda both. -Iphigenia’s sacrifice She was 12-14 not a little girl. Let’s ignore the fact Agamemnon pretending to marry off her 12-14 year old daughter wasbt out of the ordinary. Agamemnon also didn’t want to at first, he actually nearly didn’t sacrifice her, in the end he did, but the movie kinda changed that :,) -Menelaus In most myths, Menelaus is actually calm, most forgiving, and generally actually pretty merciful. He loves Helen and treats her well. In the movie, he is actually somehwat abus!v3, at least verbally and perhaps physically, which I kind saw when he grabbed her chin just to show Telemachus a scar. Menelaus was actually seen as a really bad person, and let’s be clear, even in the myth he wasbt perfect. He was still part of the war, he was not flawless, but he was much better than the rest of the kings. The odyssey movie kinda made him, ig just a bad person. Also he didn’t have his famous red hair T^T -Helen In mytg, she was actually pretty vain and dumb. I actually dislike it, but I think that she isn’t bitter or furious at Menelaus, though it makes sense with his personality in the movie. So it fits -Antinous I just hate him, very hateable character. Great job Christopher Nolan, I hate him the way he should be hated. Can’t justify putting the dog in the dung pile. He’s a bad person. -circe and calypso Granted, they are both extremly complex characters, but neither of them are as caring as they are in the movie, theyre also supposed to be extremely youthful and pretty and I think they kinda missed the youth, qnd made them both seem too eager to help Odyseus. Circe genuinely wanted Odysseus to stay to some extent, and calypso desperately wanted him, he was her onky company for practically eternity. Circe also seemed a lot less able to help herself, relies too much on magic. She’s a DAUGHTER OF A TITAN. She just needs to say a neat spell and BOOM the men who ate food are pigs. Her house is also supposed to be divine and super nice. But I mean, I’m just judging it based off of the book, theyre characters werent exactly bad, just different. -the lack of other kings at Troy I missed my children Neo and dio -lack of Telestratus Yeah ik it wasn’t actually in the mytg, and I’d be fine with them being shown as friends, in fact it’s actually possible that they were onky that, but also possible that they were lovers. I would be fine with either. Completly cutting IY out made me sad AHHHHHHHHH cause Peisistratus was actually a pretty big part of Telemachus ‘growing up’ and ‘becoming a man’ Things I liked -Agamemnon WOW. Just wow, great character, did a pretty good job making him seem flawed, and while it was kinda uo to the veiwer, showed he wasbt a good person. By the standards of Greece at the time, he was a hero, but he wasn’t a good person. He looks so cool though, I think he’s actually a great character, terrible actions and somehwat immoral, but very well portrayed. -Argos AWWWWW THE BABY I LOVE HIM SM I LIKE CRIED WHEN HE WAS MISTREATED AHHHHHHHHHH<33333333333333 -Odysseus’s regret I loved how it showed how he wasn’t a good person. I adored how it showed his flaws, it was amazing AHHHHH -Penelope being awesome and screaming she’s on the ‘empty’ throne Yeah, she’s been queen, tge throne isnt empty -showing flaws Most people in the story was all ‘good’ or ‘bad’. I like how they show that. ‘Hero’ wasnt a good person in that time. It was someone powerful. Anyways desc is too long so bye. Thx for reading my yap
Art by me Tis Agamemnon’s helmet(from the movie) Credits to Christopher Nolan’s movie, the odyssey And homers book, the odyssey Also scroll down for a bit more :) Also, for who’s fault it was, crew or captain It was both. Both of them made a few hundred mistakes. Odysseus couldnt protect them from fate, the gods, themselves, or himself. Neither could the crew. Ancient Greek poetry is actually pretty good and saying “hey, mortals and gods are flawed, it’s their hubris that destroys kingdoms and empires, whether it’s their own or someone else’s.”
