Today I took Firefly out for a cross-country ride to get him out of the arena and give him something a little more exciting to work on. We started off with a relaxed walk around the course, letting him take in all the new sights and sounds before picking up the pace. Firefly was feeling pretty forward and curious, but he listened well and settled into the ride nicely. Once we got going, we worked over a few of the smaller jumps and practiced keeping a steady pace between them. Firefly seemed to really enjoy himself and was eager to see what was coming next. He had a couple moments where he got a little too excited and wanted to rush ahead, but some half-halts and a few circles helped bring his attention back to me. We finished up by taking a quieter route around the course and letting him stretch out on a relaxed walk. Then I let him graze around in the forest. Overall, Firefly was a lot of fun to ride and handled the XC course really well. He definitely seemed to think the whole thing was much more exciting than a normal arena session—and judging by how much he wanted to keep going, I don't think he was ready to call it a day yet.
