Dance - A Short Story Written by Anebee-1 Emily Davis walked with the practiced confidence and elegance of any princess in the realm. Her back-length silver hair was pinned in a neat bun atop her head. She wore a beautiful ankle-length gown with delicate crystal shoes underneath her flowing gown. She watched the sun setting and fiddled nervously with the hem of her sleeve. This evening, there was going to be a very important ball this evening, sealing the 28th birthday of the princess of Adelone, Her majesty, Ms. Emily Davis. If the ball was being held in her favor, of course, she had to be happy but she felt more anxious than thrilled. The ball began an hour after the sun had set, nobles immediately flooded the ballroom. Emily carefully climbed onto the platform and took a deep breath. Her hands were sweaty as she clammed them together in front of her. "I really appreciate the fact that all of you made time to attend this ball", Emily started, hating the fact that her her voice sounded more gentle than confident. "This ball is to mark my 28th birthday and the union between the Kingdom of Adelone and that of the Eastern Gardens. Several other high ranking nobles gave important speeches some about politics and others about security breaches and peace treaties. Emily sat alone in a corner staring into the red juice in her glass cup. "Is this seat taken?", she heard a voice from above her say. She slowly looked up and a smile touched her lips when she saw that it was Ryan, Ryan Ashvale, her childhood friend. Emily had grown up with Ryan and they had become close friends. Ryan looked stunning, he wore a black suit with matching trousers. She found herself staring for a moment before she smiled and made space for him beside her. They chatted for a while. Emily occasionally fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve and Ryan noticed. He leaned closer and lowered his voice dramatically, "Are you nervous?" Emily was caught off guard by the question but she answered honestly anyway. "Yes." She felt Ryan push off the seat next to her and stand directly in front of her. She stared at her sleeve still holding it. "Look at me", his voice was gentle. She looked up slowly, he had offered his hand. She stared at his hand, then at him, then at his hand again. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion, "What?" "You once told me that you enjoyed dancing more than anything. So if you think it will make you less nervous," he drew a deep breath before continuing, looking into her eyes, "Let's dance." Emily stared at him before she smiled and slipped her hand into his. He led her to the dance floor with silent care. The music continues, a slow tune which happened to be one of Emily's favorite melodies. As Ryan and Emily danced, the ballroom seemed to fade. The whispers and stares of the nobles suddenly felt distant. Emily relaxed completely as the song continued to play. When Emily danced she felt her body sway elegantly to the melody. She smiled. Not the polite smile she gave nobles, but the small genuine smile. It was only when Emily danced that she forgot that she was meant to be a responsible and graceful princess of Adelone but she could simply be Emily. Ryan grinned at the satisfaction written all over her face as she leaned into his arms. 'Still feeling nervous?" "Not even in the slightest.", She said smiling as color rushed into her cheeks
