News: June 12 1964: The tensions boiling for months in Turkey finally erupted into a full blown civil war. The Workers' Party of Turkey led by Mehmet Ali Aybar attacked Istanbul and seized the city, the Turkish armed forces were quickly called into action, but who knows how long this war could last... June 22 1964: Seeing a Communist Uprising in Turkey, neighbours Greece and Bulgaria were quick to show their support by sending military aid. The tide began to turn against the Turkish forces and they were forced to retreat from Istanbul. July 1 1964: After enacting NATO Article 5, a coalition of British, French and U.S. naval vessels attempted to cross into the Tyrrhenian Sea to meet the waiting Italian fleet. However open arriving at the strait they were met with a blockade by the Spanish navy, delaying their arrival. July 3 1964: A number of Italian ships were reportedly attacked by a part of the Yugoslavian fleet. The attack caught the Italian vessels off-guard and many were sunk. This is another example of an effort to delay NATO support to Turkey just as the Spanish fleet did so 2 days ago. July 9 1964: After a number of days the Allied fleet consisting of British, French and U.S. vessels managed to meet up with the Italian navy after the Spanish ships blockading the Strait of Gibraltar were overwhelmed and forced to retreat. Once they arrived in the Ionian Sea, however, they were met with much resistance from the Greek fleet, further delaying their arrival to Turkey. July 12 1964: After almost two weeks of struggle, the NATO coalition of battleships managed to arrive on the Turkish cost, severely battered and delayed multiple times. The The Workers' Party of Turkey had made progress with support from members of the Warsaw Pact, and the war would not be easy by any means. August 26 1964: Seeing the full-blown Civil War in Turkey, a group of Nationalist Kurdish fighters rose up, led by the aspiring Sait Elçi. With the Turkish military distracted in the West, they quickly seized lands in Kurdistan and were met with little resistance. September 20 1964: After intervention from the Turkish armed forces, the Kurdish fighters were forced eastward. They then unknowingly spilt into Iranian and Iraqi territory. The government of these countries took immediate notice, sending soldiers their way. It isn't sure how much longer the resistance will be able to hold on. March 1 1965: After the passing of the Austrian President Adolf Schärf a couple of days ago, the Austrian government decided the only option was to surrender to the invading German forces. Shortly after their surrender the Germans annexed the country, taking complete control of it. It doesn't seem likely that Austria will have any chance of regaining independence without intervention from the Western Bloc. March 13 1965: After almost 7 months of war the Kurdish fighters finally got what that wanted. Peace. Wanting to focus on ending the ongoing Civil War, the Turkish government decided that letting the making peace with the Kurds and letting them run their own country was the best option so they could focus their troops elsewhere. March 21 1965: A new revolution sweeps across the USSR, ending the totalitarian regime many despised and were fed up with. A new 'council' democratically elected by the people, takes charge, giving the proletariat a choice to decide who controls the country. All this inspired by the writing of a government official, Lyudmila Svobodov. The new government made significant economic and political reforms to their nation, and better strengthened their Communist influence on the world with the new 'Communist International Party', an organisation uniting Communist Parties across the world under one banner. April 7 1965: Only just invading and annexing Austria a month ago, the German Democratic Republic declared war and began invading Switzerland. The invasion received severe backlash from many nations, due to Switzerland being a neutral country for over a hundred years. The USSR greatly condemned the German's war against Austria, and it is uncertain how they will react after this one. June 10: The last forces of the Workers' Party of Turkey peacefully surrendered to the Turkish troops after discovering that their leader, Mehmet Ali Aybar, had been captured when attempting to flee from Istanbul after its liberation. This act finally ended the almost year long civil war in Turkey, but their problems are far from over, as Greek and Bulgarian forces continue to occupy Eastern Thrace. News moved to project :)
