History: WGC-TV launched on February 1, 1947. It was the 2nd station serving North City & was the only O&O at the time. Being an owned & operated affiliate of the ABC network. It was a sister station to WGC radio (620 AM & 103.5 FM), which were O&O affiliates of ABC Radio. Since its launch until 1970, it alongside sister station WJZ-TV (later WABC-TV) in New York City had problems covering fringe parts of their markets due to them being on the same channel number & having overlapping signals. ABC would keep its the larger-market & East Coast flagship station WABC-TV, & sold the smaller-market WGC-TV to National Telecasters in 1970, a company led by millionaire Bruce Thompson. His son, Mark Thompson, was ironically the general manager for the station. WGC & WNJX (the former WGC-FM) were retained by ABC. WGC-TV had its call-letters immediately changed to WWGC-TV to comply with then-FCC rules over callsign usage. WWGC-TV while somewhat hampered with ABC's poor ratings, grew thanks to that network's lineup having better ratings by 1975. WWGC-TV was the most-watched station in North City. Bruce, wanting to focus more on his non-media assets, sold WWGC-TV to Times-Mirror Broadcasting. It was Times-Mirror's 1st standalone station acquisition since KTBC-TV in 1973. In 1993, Times-Mirror spun off its broadcasting division into a new company called Argyle Television. This 1st version of Argyle Television was then sold to New World Communications a year later, in 1994. As part of a multi-station deal between New World & Fox, WWGC-TV would become a Fox affiliate, with ABC moving to then-CBS affiliate WGOT-TV. Fox (through Fox Television Stations) would later buy WWGC-TV as part of News Corporation's purchase of New World Communications in 1997, thus becoming an O&O station of Fox. WWGC-TV is one of the few stations in the USA to have been an owned & operated affiliate of 2 separate networks during its history. Since 1963, the circle 7 (with differing designs) has been used in the station's logos, hailing back to when it was under ABC.
