Owned by radio broadcaster Clifton Kelly, it was an affiliate of CBS, despite its radio counterpart WCKB radio (590 AM and 97.3 FM) being a Mutual Radio affiliate. On April 8, 1954, WCKB-TV would lose CBS programming to WGOT-TV, whose own radio sister stations were already affiliates of CBS Radio. WCKB-TV thus became an independent station, the first in New Jersey. Motion picture studio United Artists would acquire WCKB-AM-FM-TV in 1957, calling their call-letters to "WUAA". WCKB-TV thus became WUAA-TV. UA would help boost the station, supply the station with its vast library of films and television shows. WUAA-TV would also air CBS and NBC programming that didn't air on their respective affiliates WGOT-TV and WNKW-TV. In 1976, United Artists (by then under Transamerica) would close its broadcasting division, selling WUAA-TV to Gaylord Broadcasting Company. The station would immediately drop the TV suffix as its former radio siblings began replacing the WUAA call-letters. As cable TV began to grew, WUAA would be added to various cable systems across New Jersey and surrounding areas beginning in the late 1970s. In 1984, the station branding itself as "NJ4" to reflect its reach in the state. WUAA-TV, as with most Gaylord independent stations, declined to become an affiliate of Fox in 1986, citing that it wasn't necessary to have its superstations become affiliates of the fledgling network. Rival independent station WFFG-TV picked up the Fox affiliation that same year. When the FCC enacted Fin-Syn laws in 1989, New Jersey cable systems outside of Gotham City dropped WUAA, ending its superstation status. The NJ4 branding was phased out a year later in 1990. Renaissance Broadcasting, a company which primarily owned Fox affiliates and independent stations bought WUAA in 1992, with the station becoming its sole VHF station (as most of its others were UHF). As part of Renaissance's deal with the network. WUAA became a launch affiliate of The WB on January 11, 1995. However this was short-lived as on July 1, 1995, as part of a larger affiliation switch in the area, the station became an affiliate of CBS again. Tribune Broadcasting would acquire Renaissance Broadcasting in 1996. Although it initially considered selling WUAA to Meredith Corporation in 1999, it opted to keep the station due to its high ratings and its LMA deal with by-then WB affiliate and former rival WFFG-TV. In 2013, Tribune Broadcasting would rename itself to Tribune Media. Later in 2019, Tribune Media would merge with Nexstar Media Group, keeping the latter's name. As of now, Nexstar is the current owner of the station. Since 1993, the station has used the "boxed 4", and later a modified version of it as its emblem.
