WARNING: THIS ISN'T MEANT FOR MAKING FUN OF DEMENTIA! Dementia is an umbrella term for a clinical syndrome characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions—such as memory, thinking, reasoning, and behavior—severe enough to interfere with daily life and independent functioning. It is not a specific disease nor a normal part of aging, but rather a collection of symptoms caused by various underlying brain disorders that damage or destroy nerve cells and their connections. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 60–70% of cases, though other types include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Symptoms typically develop gradually and worsen over time, often starting with forgetfulness and progressing to difficulties with language, problem-solving, spatial awareness, and emotional control. While there is currently no known cure for most forms of dementia, treatments can help manage symptoms, slow progression, and improve quality of life. Risk factors include advanced age (particularly over 65), cardiovascular issues like high blood pressure and diabetes, lifestyle factors such as smoking and physical inactivity, and social isolation. Globally, dementia is the seventh leading cause of death, affecting over 57 million people, with nearly 10 million new cases diagnosed annually. Early diagnosis is critical to rule out reversible causes and allow for better planning and management of the condition.
