Click on rocks to flip them over and see what macroinvertebrates you find! Hover over them with the mouse to see what they are. Macroinvertebrates are small animals without backbones that can be seen without a microscope. They live in rivers and streams, often inshallow but steadily flowing water. You can find them easily in a healthy waterway by flipping over rocks. Scientists keep track of water quality by looking for macros. Macroinvertebrates are very sensitive to pollution, so if a river is unhealthy, it won't have macros in it. Some macros filter algae and other food from the water's current. Some macros prey on other macros.
Virginia Save Our Streams has a free downloadable ID guide to help identify macroorganisms. I used screenshots from that guide for the macros in this project. Other than that, all art and coding was done by me.
