Who The Mirror Kept (The Girl I Knew) Amelia Stone was not one to back away from a fight. That did not, of course, apply to a fight against herself. She’d thought she was looking in a mirror. But she’d broken all of them a long time ago, in a desperate attempt to get away from that face. Her face. A book she didn’t borrow. A necklace she didn’t buy. A friend she didn’t make. They kept adding up, slowly dragging her under. She looked back now, at the face that was her but not quite her. That beautiful smile, exactly like Amelia’s. But that wasn’t what the real Amelia Stone looked like, was it? She was harried, frazzled. Tired. No one saw the real her anymore. Only her doppelgänger, who seemed more than happy to take her place in life. She was running now, running from her life, running from herself. She didn’t know how she’d gotten into this castle of nightmares, all she knew is that she needed to get out. She could hear the water dripping in the background. The wallpaper around her peeled in long yellow strips, hanging like dead skin. The smell of moss was overwhelming. Once, she would’ve loved to stop and take in the earthly aroma, but now, it made her want to retch. Amelia felt something grab a hold of her ankle. She looked down, half-expecting claws sinking into her skin. But it was her own 5 fingers keeping a death grip on her. She went down, crashing into the wooden floor. The floorboards groaned, as if they could feel her pain. Her shoulder throbbed in the place she’d made contact with the ground. She looked at her double, really looked at her. She was wearing Amelia’s favorite red dress, the one she’d worn on her 23rd birthday. And then she punched her. The next few moments blurred together. A shove, splintering wood, the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. A scream. Amelia wasn’t sure whose that was. Fighting her double was like fighting a mind-reader, each move anticipated a second before it was made. But there was one second, one blissful second, where she stumbled. Amelia took her chance and shoved, all her pain and anger and misery packed into one hard push. It worked. The girl crashed backwards, slamming into the wall. And it was just silence for a moment, peaceful, heavenly silence. She’d dreamed of this moment. Of screaming, of crying, of dying. But right now all she wanted to do was laugh until her sides ached. That was when she heard it. A crack. Making way for the collapse. Amelia didn’t remember when the floor gave in beneath her. She only remembered falling. Remembered Amelia Stone’s face above her, waving and mouthing, “toodaloo"
