✧ The Light Between Us ✧ ☆•° Chapter 17 °•☆ One Champion down, three to go. Mipha knew a lot about the Calamity, as it turned out, which greatly simplified things. She agreed almost immediately to the role, but warned us that her father would be hesitant to allow it. I completely understood. I had a vague idea that Urbosa had some special talent with electricity. That and my friendship with her prompted me to call her and discuss this whole topic. I dialed Urbosa's number. She picked up right away, and we chatted for a minute about insignificant things. The question naturally arose when she mentioned passing the interactive part of her technical engineering exams with flying colors. She laughed about handling a live wire and not feeling a thing. "Has it always been like that?" I asked suddenly. Her laughter abruptly stopped. "Yes," she replied, a more serious tone to her voice. "I've even been able to generate lightning. I always tried to be careful with it, not to hurt anybody. However, I noticed that it has a greater effect on those intending to harm me. "What do you mean?" I asked her, my curiosity piqued. "Once, on a hiking trip through the mountains in summer camp," she recounted, "we were assaulted by a group of stray Lizalfos. Panicked, I held out my hands to protect myself- and lightning struck them. My counselor later said she had experienced a minor shock. Nothing compared to what hit the monsters." Excited by this story, I stood and paced the room. "Urbosa," I said quickly, "you know the stories about the Champions long ago? I think you're one of them." She chuckled. "I've always suspected something like that. I never thought I'd actually be a Champion. I assumed you needed a Calamity for that." "So you're in?" I said, a smile growing on my face. "Of course," she answered. "What else am I going to do with this power?" I closed my eyes and savored the moment. Things finally seemed to be working out for me. "We should meet up in real life to talk about this." "Yes," Urbosa agreed. "How about you come to Gerudo Town? You can visit my college. Plus," she added wryly, "last time, I had to make the trip to Castle City." "Sure," I said. "I'll have to bring my bodyguards, though." "Bodyguards?" she inquired. I could just imagine her raising an eyebrow. "This is new. I thought you only had one." I grinned. "You'll see what I mean." # # # # # Urbosa and I strolled just outside the border of Gerudo Town. A pleasant evening had descended with the sun, along with a soft, cool breeze that carried away the last wisps of the harsh daytime heat. The dark golden sand thudded beneath my feet, a well-beaten path that stretched all the way to Kara Kara. The neon lights of the airstrip stationed there flowed with the last remnants of dusk. Link and Impa were back at the hotel, playing a hack-and-slash game. The thought of their growing relationship pained me, but this was overshadowed by the thrill of my success. I had found another Champion- and in the same week as the first. I also knew I was safe with Urbosa, so I didn't miss their protection. We had been talking about the Calamity, when I head a faint set of footsteps other than ours. I assumed it was just some residents outside to enjoy the crisp night air, but Urbosa tensed. "Don't move," she hissed. The footsteps stopped. I turned slightly to see two ordinary-looking Hylians. "Unlike you," Urbosa said loudly, "I prefer to face my enemies head on." I only had a second to wonder about this, when the Hylians disappeared in a burst of smoke and cards, and reappeared as fully armored Yiga foot soldiers. I gasped and prepared to run. Urbosa turned sharply. The Yiga raced at her, knives raised, but she held her ground. She squinted one eye like she was aiming, then snapped her fingers. The ground itself shook as a white-hot lightning bolt streaked out of the sky, crashing into the Yiga with an echoing roll of thunder. My hair stood up on one end, the air humming with the aftershock. As the sparks and sand cleared, I saw the Yiga unconscious, lying prostrate on the earth. "The police will arrest them soon," Urbosa told me. I stood still, amazed at her power. I knew she was strong, but this was beyond my imagination. Two thoughts flashed through my head, as bright and clear as the lightning. One, I was completely safe with Urbosa. And two, I had chosen the right Champion. ☆•° Chapter 16 °•☆ ☆•° Chapter 18 °•☆ Not out yet
