So, you know OS wars? The competition where you make an operating system in scratch? Well, I was making a project in parallel to it (I didn't get in) and ran into the problem of: I spent the first month on the vm alone, then needed to rebuild it all, realised I need to build a kernel, compiler and default apps, and have it run quickly. In other words, the OS is completely seperate to the VM and if the VM takes up all the competition time, then you can't finish the OS. So, I am hosting a competition, at the oposite end of the year to OS wars (so in winter) where you must build a VM which is fast and functional. We do not care about the code, how it works or similar, only that it can run Doom and is faster than the last iteration. If you would be interested in this, please could you comment that you'd be interested.
CATEGORIES: 8 bit (retro) 16 bit (small) 32 bit (medium) 64 bit (large) >64 bit (how many bits can a scratch vm use?) (this one has an extra condition) CONDITIONS: Speed: 1-5 points, 1 point is if it is much slower that the average ins/sec, up to 5 which is the fastest. Functionality: 1-5 points, 1 point for limited instructions or lots of arbitrary instructions, 5 for just enough and no bloat Compiler: 0-2, 1 point for C compiler, 1 for other language. Assembly does not count. Ram: 1-8, 1 for not much ram, 8 for theoretically a lot. (relative to other contestants) Each size of VM will be competing separately.
