Fishflypaw was recalling, rethinking. Remembering. What had happened? What were her origins? And most importantly, who? “I think you’re going to grow big and strong, just like your mother.” That’s all she remembered. She knew her parents’ names. Nala and Bone. But what else? ——————— (this is the canon story here!) “Nala,” Bone blinked. “Don’t go out again! You just had a kit! What if that one fox patrolling around gets you? I can’t raise a kit without you… you’re the best at everything, you know…” Nala’s tail flicked. “Oh, come on, Bone, you know I’ve beaten a fox onc-“ “With a major injury! You wouldn’t have lived without your healing skills!” Bone shook his head. “I’m probably being paranoid, yes, but.. we don’t have many resources right now, you know. We’re holding up pretty weakly. We need some extra strength for fighting foxes and solo walks.” “Perhaps we shouldn’t squabble about this right now,” Nala meowed with a glance at her child. “I don’t want our kit’s first memory for us to be arguing, after all, right, dear?” He nodded, “I’m just worried… probably. Go on your walk, I guess. I’ll watch her.” “Maybe then I’ll choose some names that I like,” Nala continued. “Then you can choose her final name!” “I love that idea,” Bone replied, watching her leave. It wasn’t long before Bone worried. More and more and more. More time passed. And more. And more… And more! He could’ve sworn he’d heard a panicked yowl, but surely he was just imagining it? He quickly hid his kit in a small burrow and rushed after Nala’s tracks, fall leaves hitting his face. Soon, he saw her. She… was gone. And she would be gone forever. He would never see her again. At least never alive. “So, you see, little one,” Bone had tried explaining it to his zero moon old kit. What would she drink? How would she not starve? “Your mum— she’s-“ his voice cracked. “How about I get you some food first?” He snuck into a twoleg’s den. They had a kitten. Probably sold off to this twoleg. It was cruel, really, separating family like this. At least for him. Anyways, they had this… cylinder thing that had milk sooo… he went in and stole it and gave it to his kit. What was he supposed to do? Soon, she grew and she grew and she grew. He couldn’t be prouder. “So, dad, are you going hunting?” The kitten asked, glancing at her father who seemed to be leaving. “Yes,” he replied briskly, “stay safe, okay?” “Can you catch a mouse and a vole for me?” She pleaded. It was her favorite. “Okay, of course…” he glanced around, searching for a possible name as if looking with his eyes would reveal one. Then he spotted a fishfly and gave it to her. “Fishfly.” “Fishfly!..” Fishfly chirped. “I like it!” He left abruptly, scenting fox. Hopefully there would be one less scent mixed in there so she wouldn’t get hurt. But then he saw it. The fox. Bone glanced down. He had been reunited with his mate. There was this cat who was gray-ish, and they were taking her. Where? He didn’t know, but they sure saw the fishfly pet next to her.
