Hello! I'm Cursor, a scratcher of ~7 years. I've switched accounts many times, and have turned my focus towards art in my second year of scratching, more specifically DMCs. What is a DMC: DMC stands for Draw My Character meaning, you would give people a character of your own to draw, and then whoever's art of the character you like the best wins. Why you should trust me: i'm a scratcher of ~7 years and have hosted three DMCs on scratch. from my third year on scratch forward, most of my projects were entries for DMCs. in total i have entered *AT LEAST* 70 DMCs. What makes a good DMC: 1) make it accessible, there are so many times i have looked at DMCs that i wanted to join, but figuring out how the project worked was too much of a hassle. not everybody uses Scratch on a computer, so going to the next slide of the DMC should be through tapping the screen, not pressing a button on your keyboard. another thing is making it easy to read, no fancy fonts or special effects, the default scratch font will work just as well, -maybe even better. 2) make a theme. themed DMCs tend to do better. think of themes like, cafe, camping, or zodiacs. here are some themes that are too broad: -food -jobs -plants instead, make them more specific, instead of food, make the theme a style or type of food (ex, food you will find at a carnival, popular candy brands, homemade food from childhood, etc.) instead of plants, make it more specific (ex. spring flowers, desert plants, etc.) 3) make good designs. i HATE when designs are too simple, don't make a character that's just a random person on the street with a hairclip. give them story, something people will enjoy drawing. do they have wings or horns? why? where? what kind of fashion do they like? why do they like that fashion? are they wealthy or poor? do they have the money to get said fashion they like? but also, don't make the designs too complicated, i have a general rule for character design. can you draw it from memory? and is the character easily confused with a different character? 4) know your audience. lots of people on scratch either draw dragons, cats, or humans. cats making up a large majority. if your character is a human, do they have a feral (animal) design? 5) prizes. DMCs with out a prize is just free art. what are the prizes? are there PGs (prizegivers, usually people who sign up to follow the winner) or will you give them art as their prize? 6) advertisements a lot of studios are on scratch for DMCs, i like to go on those studios from time to time if i want to join any. DO NOT advertise on studios or projects that aren't related. that is just annoying. 7) don't expect to have thousands of entries. depending on your popularity, you might have only three entries or fifty. the most common entries for DMCs is 3-5 entries. remember, give them a month or two to draw.
if you don't want to read all the detail up there, here's the dumbed down version of what i meant: 1) make the DMC easy to read and navigate, don't make it confusing 2) make a theme for the DMC, it makes it less boring 3) make a good design, add detail to make it fun to draw, but not too much detail where the artist gets overwhelmed 4) know what kind of people you want to enter your DMC 5) make good prizes 6) advertise 7) set reasonable expectations
